Background

Harboro Rubber was on its original site since 1894 with part of its building listed. The company extended over the years from 1900 to 1950 using north light pitched roofing. Unfortunately this construction was only 8 ft to the eves much of it with pillars every 12 ft. This greatly constricted layouts.
The town has also grown over the years and the old site was amongst housing and close to the centre of the town (200m from Sainsbury’s front door) which was far from ideal. We had sought to relocate for many years but Harboro’ skills lie in its experienced and committed workforce as well as its technology and equipment. When looking at re-siting in the 1990’s we have restricted ourselves to the local area. No substantial factories were built or came on the market and so we extended the premises in 1998 to accomodate new machinery and expansion. This did not solve the problem of the old part of the factory however and we continued to look for a long term solution.
